How to hang your Tate Fencing Five Bar Field Gate
The Tate Fencing guide to hanging your five bar field gate. There are two ways to hang a five bar field gate; either on the back of the posts or between the posts. Normally gates are hung on the backs of the posts but some situations require they should be hung between. This allows for the gate or gates to open both ways for instance. In either case posts must be placed accurately according to the width of the gate and making allowance for the fittings to be used. The diagrams below show how to calculate the distance between the posts with recommended fittings. You can download or print a copy by clicking on the “Download as PDF button“. Single gate hung on the back of posts (Gate will open/swing inwards only)
Distance between the posts = width of gate less 50mm (2”). This allows gate to overlap posts by 25mm (1”). Recommended fittings are standard hanging set and auto catch or spring latch.
Pair of gates hung on the back of posts (Both gates will open/swing inwards only)
Distance between the posts = combined widths of gates less 38mm (1½” ). This allows that gate to overlap posts by 25mm (1”) with a 12mm (½”) gap between gates. Recommended fittings are standard hanging sets with loop over and drop bolts.
Single gate hung between the posts (Gate will open/swing both ways)
Distance between the posts = width of gate plus 195mm (7¾”). This allows 100mm (4”) for the adjustable hanging set and 95mm (3¾”) for the spring latch and central catch. Add 25mm if using a hook on plate instead of standard hanging set. Recommended fittings are standard hanging set and spring latch and central catch.
Pair of gates hung between the posts (Both gates will open/swing both ways)
Distance between the posts = combined widths of gates plus 212mm (8½”). This allows 100mm (4”) for each adjustable hanging set and 12mm (½”) gap between gates. Add 50mm if using two hook on plates instead of standard hanging sets. Recommended fittings are standard hanging sets with a loop over and drop bolts.
