Wood is a natural material and not evenly porous, not all areas of an item may dry at an even rate. This uneven drying creates tremendous pressure inside the wood which causes it to split, twist or warp as it is exposed to sunlight and air.
Wood that has been pressure treated will shrink as the water used in the treatment process evaporates from the timber. It is very unusual for any of these natural weathering characteristics to be detrimental to the structural strength or shorten the life expectancy of the timber. Dark stains or paints will increase the absorption of sunlight and speed up the drying of the timber. Sealants and Oils hold the moisture in and allows the timber to dry at a slower rate.

– Characteristics of Timber –
The nature of timber, being a natural product, means no pieces are exactly identical. It is not a man-made product made from a consistent formulae like steel or plastic.
Different pieces of the same size wood will move differently, causing cracks and twists in some and not in others. Timber placed outside continues to contract during the initial period and then expand and contract throughout its use. This natural movement is even more noticeable during extremes of wet and dry periods.
We are currently experiencing one of the driest and hottest periods, so we will naturally expect to see more movement. Most movement will recede back to some degree once moisture levels return to more normal levels. However, some cracks and twists will remain. This is not a defect, but a characteristic of the product, which must be taken in to account when making your purchase decisions.
– Gate Disclaimer –
Timber is a natural material and as gates are fixed at one end there may be some movement of up to 50 to 75mm. It is common to have to readjust gates after hanging them.
We do not recommend using dark stains on gates as they attract heat which may cause additional movement in the timber.
We guarantee gates in standard frame (50mm) width up to and including 1050mm against excessive twisting. We can make standard frame gates wider than 1050mm however these are more susceptible to natural twisting and are not guaranteed.
– Website Photos and images-
All product photographs and images are for illustration purpose only. The actual product may vary from the photos show. Due to the treatment process the colour of softwood timber will vary in colour from the photos. Also softwood timber will start off a shade of green depending on when it was treated, and then fade when in the sun. We cannot match softwood timber colour to existing timber.
